socialbookmarks.jpgWhat Are Social Bookmarks?
By Bud Wiser

Seems the latest buzz and fad are social bookmark sites. What are they? Well you already know about at least one of them, Technorati! With out a doubt the largest and most well known! Del.icio.us, FURL, and digg are a few others worth mentioning, which are also growing quickly. Social bookmark sites are basically community oriented. Which means they are independent from the evil clutches of search engine influence and dependency. Technorati is actually a search engine too! It is by far the most important RSS aggregator, and is included in Wordpress pinging by default.

Actually I see a distinction between actual bookmark sites like del.icio.us, and search engine based Technorati, which also uses tags. My opinion of social bookmark sites is it’s mostly a fad. I really don’t care what other people bookmark or vote on. That is not how I conduct my searches. But services like Technorati go way beyond that, and introduce the best of every thing. In fact the Technorati page looks like a search engine at first, but after closer look you can see it’s actually more.

Social Bookmark sites like Del.icio.us looks totally different, and is maintained differently. While it does use tags, it structure is

more free based. Click here to read the intended uses for del.icio.us. Again, this would not be some thing I would use to search the web.

For SEO value, I would definitely recommend Technorati! And may be del.icio.us. You can read more about Social Bookmarking by McCarley at The 14th Colony.

He is a big fan of Social Bookmarking and has a much more optimistic opinion and prediction of it. He makes many good points, and is interesting reading!

I suggest Technorati full force and subscribing to all the RSS aggregators, specialty search engines, and directories for SEO. Social Bookmark sites do have spamming potentials, and for that reason, perhaps there is some SEO value. I just don’t see them around for the long haul.

    Bud,

I set up a new Wordpress blog Jan. 5th or so on a brand new poker domain without knowing what I was doing. Nearly every single link or visitor to it this month (about 50) is from technorati using smart tags…I never did anything deliberately, is technorati smart enough to create its own tags from a simple WP install?

    Hey Pokerfreshman,

Technorati has a huge readership! And since it’s also a search based engine, you can expect some traffic from them. In fact on some of my blogs I get more traffic from technorati then msn and google on a daily basis!

Your wp blog sends pingomatic a ping on every post, which technorati quickly pics up, they are very aggressive! Try adding them to your wp pinger!

    thanks for sharing!
