Matt Cutts and Google
– By Bud Wiser
I’m sure there are a lot of opinions about Google and Matt Cutts, the two seem almost synonymous these days. I think that’s unfair. Matt Cutts is not Google. In fact if you follow Matt’s blog, Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google, and SEO carefully, you will see that although Matt is certainly a company man, and very loyal to Google, he is his own man too, and is not afraid to mention it. He won’t come right out and speak against Google, but he has said a number of times that he doesn’t always agree with every thing Google does.
That’s fine, because some of us also don’t always agree with what Google does, and we don’t always agree with what Googles top engineer, Matt Cutts always says or does too!
My first impression of Matt Cutts was not that good at all. I thought he was a spoiled rotten geek. First impressions are hard to get over, but I did. After following Matt’s blog over the past year, and related stories and interviews, I now view Matt differently and have respect for him. Despite a lot of difference of opinions I might have with him, I can see he is just doing his job.
Matt Cutts is cool! I’m not bull shitting you! I mean it. Although I have never met Matt in person, I have heard from reliable sources who have met him that he is really a very good natured guy, likes to party and have fun, and is nothing like one would expect him to be. I believe these reports. Let’s face it, any one who can hang out with blackhat spammers like Dax. And post a link to his website without the nofollow tag! Can’t be all that bad now can they?
Google on the other hand is a bit more complicated to understand. With all their faults, they still are the best search engine. I was not always of this opinion either! Up until about 5 months ago, I was of the opinion that Yahoo! was the best search engine. But God only knows what happened to Yahoo! Lately they have become the worst! For the first time ever, I rate MSN over Yahoo! But that’s a different story all together!
I was sure that either Yahoo! or MSN would be closer to over take the number one spot by now. Please note, I said, “closer” to taking over, and not taking over. Again I was wrong! They are still not even close to Google. Despite Google’s wide lead over other search engines, they continue to push forward, commanding a brutal lead! At this point of the game, I see absolutely no serious threats for Google. Of course that could change in a few more months, but from what I see, that’s unlikely.
So Mr. Cutts, and Google, I salute you! But I also must remind you that being number one comes with a price. Google will continue to be targeted heavily by black hats and spammers! Nothing personal, just the nature of the game!
