Guerrilla MarketingGUERRILLA MARKETING
ON THE INTERNET!

By Bud Wiser

The term guerrilla marketing was coined by  Jay Conrad Levinson in his popular 1982 book Guerrilla Marketing. A inspiration for all us marketers who considered ourselves some what unconventional any way.

Guerrilla Marketing is essentially an unconventional way of performing promotional activities on a very low budget, often considered to be done undercover or here comes that word again, unethical.

I’ve wrote about guerrilla marketing before on my SEO Traffic Rank site, and am fascinated by it and even more so on how it is applied on the Internet! So I thought it would be cool to write once again about a subject I find interesting and no doubt others will too if not controversial!

A brief background on myself. I have been involved in marketing and sales for a long time! Even before the Internet! Yup, I’m a old timer for sure! Sales is in my blood, along with some other vices we won’t talk about.   So for me guerrilla marketing is very exciting! In fact I was practicing it for years before I targeted the Net. So when I started working on the Internet, naturally all my sales and marketing experience came in handy and I was able to adopt many of it on the Internet! Yes, even guerrilla marketing!  And don’t think for one freaking minute I was alone!

It never ceases to amaze me to hear so many webmasters, marketers, and even some “blackhats” talk about ethics regarding seo, and marketing! These people who try to evaluate moral levels by business practices would be used as tooth picks by sharks! In the real business world there is only one rule, and that is, There Are No Rules! Much like real wars, things get broken, people die, accept in guerrilla marketing, no one dies, only their feelings get hurt, and may their business. Perhaps some people believe that they can change the world by pushing their views on others, may be they can, but I am of the opinion that preaching is best left at church or a synagogue, not in the business market place. If you want to follow your own path, by all means do so, just stay out of other peoples way.

So what is guerrilla marketing like on the Internet? Basically it is any thing that involves techniques, usually undercover to either perform advertisements for your product, or to damage your competitor. It can be used either way! It can involve search engines, or not. A smear campaign is guerrilla marketing! Reverse marketing is guerrilla marketing. What is reverse marketing? It’s a clever way to grab serps by blowing smoke. For example, you pick a subject that is a lot of peoples HOT button, like SPAM! And throw up pages and posts geared to attract people who are against it! Or any thing controversial will work. Pages about rape, abortion, hate groups, politics can all be effectively used for reverse marketing. It’s guerrilla marketing when you really don’t care one way or the other about the topic, and are using other peoples emotions to get traffic. A lot of those anti-spam pages who love to talk shit about spammers use reverse marketing!

Basically guerrilla marketing resembles guerrilla warfare except nobody dies! It’s done undercover, dirty deeds done dirt cheap! It’s up to individual marketers to come up with their own tactics! Unlike BH seo, there are no set techniques which automatically qualifies it for GM. And you can bet your sweet google nobody is going to ever admit doing any GM! But I can assure you, there are alot of people doing it!

Depending on the reaction and interst of GM, I may write more about it. That’s it for now you big ape!
